Zombies vs Supermodels
Is that a zombie or a supermodel? I think this Zombie Vs. Supermodel infographic is disturbingly hilarious because of the truth behind it. What do you think?
Data glory holes
Aram Bartholl is mortaring USB drives into walls, curbs, and buildings around New York. These dead drops, as he terms them, are peer-to-peer file transfer points with true anonymity. Bartholl has a residency with EYEBEAM, a truly fascinating incubator of and studio for new ideas in technology and art. The project has five initial locations [...]
Feds forced to admit that it’s legal to take pictures of federal buildings
The New York Civil Liberties Union and Libertarian activist Antonio Musumeci just won a court case that affirms the right of photographers to take pictures and record video out front of federal courthouses. The US federal government settled the case by apologizing to Musumeci for his arrest, acknowledging that it is legal to record at [...]
The True Size of Africa
I'm no cartographer, so I can't comment on its accuracy... but this alternative visualization of the size of the African continent compared to various world nations is thought-provoking. No, Africa's not a country, but it's interesting to compare the land mass to countries perceived as more powerful. (more...)
Lockheed Martin sign prohibits sketching and “gathering information”
An anonymous photographer snapped this delightful pic of a way minatory sign on the chain-link outside a Lockheed-Martin factory. I love that they prohibit "gathering of information" -- I wonder what Claude Shannon would have to say about that. I'd love to see the court case, in any event, provided I wasn't the defendant.
Fake DHS “photography license” for fake no-photos laws
All around the world, cops and rent-a-cops are vigorously enforcing nonexistent anti-terrorist bans on photography in public places. If you're worried about being busted under an imaginary law, why not download these templates and print yourself an imaginary "Photography license" from the DHS? Who knows if it's legal to carry one of these... [...]
Photos from China’s 10-day-long traffic jam
On Monday, the BBC reported on a 62-mile traffic jam in China, northwest of Beijing, where vehicles had been almost at a standstill for nine days. Naturally, the internet was fascinated. Doctor Who references were made. Personal commutes seemed less terrible by comparison. According to that BBC story, Chinese state TV reported that [...]
Solar eclipse at Easter Island (part 2)
Another Easter Island solar eclipse photo was suggested by a reader. Another fantastic photo. I like this one better (by Juan Carlos Casado): http://www.twanight.org/newTWAN/photos.asp?ID=3002605 Also, make sure you check out Guisard's shots of Easter Island at night here and here. Something about those ancient sentinels silently staring into [...]
The Abandoned Palace on Beekman Street
How the hell does something this beautiful stay abandoned for so long? Was the owner just like, "Ehh, I don't really feel like making BOATLOADS right now. I'll wait half a century first." 5 Beekman Street has a secret. You’ve probably passed it a million times in your travels through downtown Manhattan. Anyone who has ever visited J&R [...]
