Vuvuzelas may be all the rage at the World Cup in South Africa, but authorities at New York City’s Yankee Stadium refused to let fans toot on the plastic horns, the New York Post reported Thursday.

When Yankees fan Anthony Zachariadis wailed on his vuvuzela at a game at the legendary stadium Tuesday night, security snatched it out of his hands.

Zachariadis, 27, purchased several vuvuzelas months ago for $6 apiece on a soccer website, with the intention of traveling to the World Cup. When the trip fell through, he decided to bring the sounds of soccer to Yankee Stadium.

“I hid them in my shorts to get into the stadium, and when I pulled out the horns, the whole place went nuts,” he said.

Though hugely popular in South Africa, the horns — which can reach an excruciating 120 decibels — are now reviled by soccer fans around the world.

After Yankees player Mark Teixeira hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth, Zachariadis went wild on the horn, which sounds like a cross between an elephant and a donkey.

That was when security intervened and Zachariadis agreed to leave the game in return for not having his horns seized.
“I have been tossed from that place hundreds of times. Many times I even deserved it,” he said. “But this was ridiculous.”

The Yankees did not return calls seeking comment.

The rules for fans, posted on the team’s website, said fans cannot “blow horns and all other distracting noisemakers.”
