The Salvation Army has a reputation of helping out the needy and until today I had no idea they were so… stringent. I have been putting coins in those buckets since I was very little but I think those days are done.
My friend’s protestant church seems to live closer to christian ideals and makes the disparity between organizations like The Salvation Army and such ideals all the more apparent. Just think, every dollar you give to a catholic charity is a dollar that could have gone to a secular charity, but didn’t.
A secular charity would have a fact-based approach to helping poor communities, which may ( gasp ) include recommending birth control. Catholic charities will perhaps feed and clothe the poor, but then build them a church where they’re told they’ll burn in hell if they don’t throw out their condoms.
I don’t contribute to Scientology “anti-addiction” charities, either… for the same sorts of reasons.

disregard that, just read the link…
I’ve read their positions and am curious about which ones you oppose. And btw, I’m not a religious person but I really can’t argue with 95% of their positions. They base they positions on their Christian faith but even if you look at this from a purely secular point of view as I do they still make sense. Although I don’t believe that the secular government should dictate its morality(or lack of it) to the people (although we still need laws against crimes) and I think all of the issues should be approached with persuasion and not necessarily laws by governments, I don’t think that it’s good to promote certain things in society like gambling or pornography, what possible good can come of it?
I have always dropped a dollar into the Salvation Army kettles. Now that I have read what they stand for, I will be dropping a five spot in their kettles in the future.
Really interesting, thank you for taking your time to write this.
