The printed March 2008 version of Wired issue has a handy hint for how to break up on Facebook without sending a news blast to your friends list about it.
To change your relationship status without the press release, go to Facebook’s privacy options, deselect “Remove My Relationship Status” then, in your profile settings, change “In a Relationship” back to its default setting “Select Status”.
Voila, now you won’t be broadcasting the news of your recent split to the world. The article points out that your ex’s Mini Feed will still display an update in *their* relationship status, so you can’t get away scot free. They’ll need to delete it themselves. Oh well.

Wired are crap once again. the above instructions do not work.
there is no such field of “remove my relationship status” at privacy options.
If you are going to give instructions do it right. or not at all.
(yes I write manuals, & QA, you have to exact and pedantic or go and do another job that you might be better at).
so we say again WHERE EXACTLY (point by point) is the “remove my relationship status” option?
Yes, the Wired instructions are confusing. Here’s how I removed relationship status completely from “info” page on profile. First, go to your profile. Open “basic information.” Use the pull-down menu on relationship status. Here’s the important part: above the option for “single,” there’s a completely blank option — there’s no text, and it’s hard to see at first, but it is there. Pick that blank option. Hit “save changes.” That should work. Let me know if you agree.
Part 2: it’s not enough to just remove your relationship status, as I described above. You can choose not to publicize “changed relationship status.” To do that, go to “settings” in the blue bar at top of page. When “settings” page opens, go to “privacy” and hit “manage.” When privacy page opens, go to “news feeds and wall.” When news feed page opens, DESELECT the line that says “remove relationship status.” Hit “save changes.” That should work.
Continued from my comment above: you can also choose not to PUBLICIZE “changed relationship status” in your news feed. To do that, go to “settings” in the blue bar at top of page. When “settings” page opens, go to “privacy” and hit “manage.” When privacy page opens, go to “news feeds and wall.” When news feed page opens, DESELECT the line that says “remove relationship status.” Hit “save changes.” That should work.
Thanks Ethan, this was very helpful and totally worked!
Cheers mate that done the trick, my ex broadcast our split up for everyone to see on the news feed and i only knew a few days later lol, just did those changes and it worked fine no news feed no nothing, why go through it all a second time lol
Thank you Ethan! You were really helpful, unlike that useless post above. =)
If I am listed as “married to” and then change it to the blank field, will that notify the person I am listed as “married to” that the field is now blank? I changed the privacy settings to it won’t go in my newsfeed for friends to see. But will he know I changed the field to blank?
It’s not a childish thing, so much as something I just don’t want to look at anymore on my profile. My husband left a month ago, and is already seeing someone, even though we aren’t divorced. We have kids. I don’t want it in his newsfeed that his status has changed. I just want it off of mine so I don’t have to look at it anymore. Others will eventually notice its absence from my profile, but that’s different than informing him, or posting it somewhere. If it’s going to show in his newsfeed, then I’ll leave it as is.
