Facebook in talks to buy WhatsApp

WhatsAppCould Facebook be in the mood for purchasing another messaging company? The social network giant bought popular mobile messaging client Beluga last year, and rumors suggest Facebook could add WhatsApp to its portfolio. Techcrunch reports that unnamed sources close to the deal say that Facebook and WhatsApp have been in talks about a possible acquisition. Details about price have not been revealed, and its unclear if an agreement will be reached, but the two sides are in talks, according to sources.

Purchasing WhatsApp would be a surprising move for Facebook. WhatsApp is a direct competitor to Facebook Messenger, which works on desktop and mobile, so it would likely cost Facebook time and money if it chose to integrate the two services or continue to operate them independently as it did when the company acquired Instagram. There’s also a chance that Facebook might acquire WhatsApp to take advantage of the company’s development talent or to expand its advertising network to include what’s currently an ad-free, subscription-based application.

WhatsApp already has a large audience with millions of active uses and more than 1 billion messages sent each day. The app is available for Android, Apple iOS, BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Phone.
